I sure did! Do we really think that sitting still inside a classroom for six hours per day is an easy or natural thing for any child to do — not to mention highly energized kids with ADHD?

Those are unhappy statistics. In a minute, I’ll tell you how to turn around those numbers.

But before I do, let me tell you what my methods are NOT:

  • They are not just a collection of vague, general information on attention deficit disorder. 
  • They are not a bunch of theoretical nonsense you can’t really use.
  • They are not a series of complicated steps that require special training or talent. (Don't we have enough of that gobbledy-gook already?!)

Here's what my methods ARE:

Here’s an example that, while more dramatic than most, is not at all untypical:

Not too long ago, I had a student named Josh who had a severe case of ADHD. He acted impulsively, blurted obscenities, had a history of violence with other students, and even attacked one of his teachers.

Frankly, I didn’t want anything to do with Josh. But he was placed in my classroom and I had no choice but to teach him.

Now, after only two months of using my simple strategies, Josh’s behavior improved so dramatically that when a brand new student began acting up in my class, Josh actually helped calm down the new student!

This previously unmanageable kid was actually helping manage my own classroom! My worst nightmare became my unwitting teaching assistant!

I found a way to reach Josh that was so simple and natural that he had no idea I was trying to lead him down a better path. My "new-found techniques" didn’t cost me a dime, took almost no effort, but were so powerful that they worked in countless other problematic situations.

This will work for your child at home, too.

I could give you page after page of stories about children who have been transformed by these techniques, but for now, let me just tell you that I’ve taught kids considered to be the absolute poster children of ADHD.

The good news is that I was able to get through to each and every one of them using these techniques, and, most importantly, they all graduated from high school on time and now lead productive lives.

do these four things with your child and you will

1. "Listen" to your child's misbehavior.

Your child’s misbehavior isn't just an annoying disruption — it's a secret message your child is (unwittingly) trying to convey to you. And usually that message can be boiled down to two words: "Reach me!" Most parents never get beyond their own frustration to consider what their child’s misbehavior is truly about. But if you peek behind the curtain of your child’s world, you will easily find out what your child’s problems are really about.

2. Step up to the plate, make a stand, and be counted!

Never assume that “everything is fine” when it comes to your child’s education. You simply can’t afford to sit idle and trust that the school will somehow improve and look out for your child’s best interests. It’s also not enough to hope against hope that Joey will somehow have a better year than last year. Hope is not enough! You need a plan.

And don’t believe the school when it tells you that, in effect, “they don’t do windows” when it comes to your kid. Trust me, they do. You just have to hand them the Windex and show them where to scrub. . . . But they won’t do a thing if you’re too pushy or if you haven’t pre-paved the way for them.

Bottom line — Think back on all the times there was an injustice happening in your world and you decided to stand up and be counted instead of leaving it alone. You NEVER regret standing up for what’s truly important . . . and what could be more important than your child?

3. Make a real connection to see REAL results.

Children need someone in authority they can bond with. The key to making them successful is becoming that person. You don’t bribe or beg for their affections. Instead, you make real connections with them, which will make all the difference in the world. By doing this, your child will become more likeable to others. And when you help your child become likeable, the likelihood of him getting into trouble is greatly reduced.

4. Stop controlling and start coaching.

Adapt your style of parenting from a controlling, adversarial mode to something more like coaching. Strange as it sounds, you almost want to think of yourself as a personal trainer for your child. The typical parent is thinking, "I need to establish control, and my child needs to follow me and do what she’s told." And that works just fine for many children. But it’s a whole different ball game with ADHD kids. We need to be open to a new approach. If traditional methods worked so well, then why are we even reading this letter?

Okay, let me let you in on one more bonus secret. It's this . . . most underachieving kids want to turn around . . . even if they might not act like it.
